The ability to offer features on demand will help car makers generate future revenue. Currently, such features are mainly limited to in-vehicle infotainment apps. However, many new features, including ADAS features, cannot be implemented and delivered as in-vehicle infotainment apps, as they consist of SW components with varying safety requirements. These need to be installed and orchestrated on several compute nodes and on various runtimes. Deploying and orchestrating feature-on-demand workloads is the key to turning the entire vehicle into an application platform. To achieve this, we need technology and platform agnostic orchestration, so dynamic workloads can be deployed, started, and monitored across multiple execution runtimes.

The diverse needs of different vehicle manufacturers call for a flexible, scalable, robust, and easily integrated orchestration framework. This framework must also be customizable and have a low resource footprint. The heterogeneous nature of vehicle platforms will persist as it is not only a matter of technical legacy, but results from the varying safety requirements of distinct vehicle domains. The challenge for industry players and consortiums is to address this heterogeneity with interoperable orchestration solutions.
